A 20-year-old man told police he and a 14-year-old boy broke into a home in West Lubbock to steal drugs, money and a rifle, but were interrupted by a neighbor who was shot and killed, according to a warrant released Monday.
Kyi Drake Baker, who police arrested Sunday in connection with the Saturday night shooting death of Robert Dendy, told police investigators the boy admitted to him that he shot at the man, the warrant states.
Lubbock police responding to an 8:40 p.m. burglary call in the 4700 block of Auburn Street found Dendy suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center where he died.
Another neighbor told police he saw a Dodge Magnum drop off two people with bandanas over their faces, who entered a home in the 4700 block of Auburn Street, the warrant states. The neighbor said his father went to look for anyone trying to break into the homes in the area.
One of the witnesses wrote down the license plate number of the vehicle and gave it to police.
The driver of the vehicle, who was the 14-year-old boy’s uncle, reportedly told police he dropped off Baker and his nephew in the area and drove home.
Members of the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit found Baker about two hours later in the 5300 block of 11th Street at the apartment where the boy lived. He told police he accompanied the boy to the home on Auburn Street to help steal a safe he believed contained drugs, money and an AR-15 rifle.
He said the boy was armed with a gun, which police seized at the apartment.
Baker said they were taking the safe and a box of stolen items outside through a window they broke when they were confronted by Dendy, who was armed with a gun and told them to freeze, the warrant states.
Baker reportedly told police he ran away but the boy retreated inside the residence.
Baker said he returned to the apartment, and the teen was already there. He said the boy told him he shot Dendy, the warrant states.
The warrant states both Baker and the boy suffered cuts on their hands and their clothes were bloody, injuries investigators believe were consistent with jumping over wood and chain link fences.
The boy was taken to Covenant Children’s for treatment and initially denied to officers there that he shot Dendy. However, he reportedly told a nurse that Dendy chased him so he shot him.
Baker remains held at the Lubbock County Detention Center. His bail is set at $100,000.
The boy was taken Sunday morning to the Lubbock County Juvenile Justice Center.
