(WWJ) A Monroe police officer is hospitalized after she was shot in the line of duty.

Monroe Police say Corporal Renae Peterson responded to the call of a stolen car in the area of E. Second Street and Winchester Street on Sunday around 8pm.

The victim told Peterson that two “unknown suspects” hit her in the head with a handgun while stealing her car, according to police.

Peterson located the car in the area of North Dixie Highway and Ternes Drive. Monroe Police tell WWJ the suspects fired shots, striking the officer, after she “called out to the vehicle.”
